Knitting in the off time

I love working with glass but its not what I call a portable craft. In the evenings or just about any time I need to relax I pick up my knitting or crocheting. It so easy to take with you while waiting at the train station or a doctor's office.

This blanket I started a week ago for a sweet guy who is having his first baby. Its a boy but since he is due in the spring I wanted something bright and cheerful. I found this pattern at http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/home/free-knitting-patterns-for-baby-blankets2.htm

I actually did a test swatch for gauge this time and adjusted my pattern for it. I'm so bad about that with blankets but after last spring making the never ending blanket for my grandson I figured it was time to give in.

I love knitting for babies. I don't get bored before its finished.

Now I'm ready to start the booties that will go with it.

Dapple and Max Etch Cream

This is a pretty cool product. You paint it on the glass before firing.

I bought the Dapple and Max Etch and tried it on some sample glass -

I fired it on transparent blue with a opal white under. I put a cab in the picture that doesn't have the cream for comparison.

The green is a opal green with Max Etch on it.
The pink has Dapple cream.
The dark blue is transparent blue with the Max Etch and I etched with a Dremel cattails on it as a test.

This is 2 layers of transparent blue with Dapple cream on the 2 corners and Max Etch in the center.

The glass has texture to it with the cream fired on top. The Dapple is pretty rough to the point you think you can scrape it off but it doesn't.

My next experiment with it is to see what it does fired with a clear glass top.

Clear dichroic on white. The dichroic change from blues, yellow, green and pinks with silver stripes for texture.

Testing firing thin fire in glass

I put thin fire between color glass and capped with clear. I put chads under the clear to vent.
As you can see in the yellow one the chads left their mark.

In the top 3 I cut shapes, triangles, square and an arrow. They didn't hold their shape.
In the bottom 2 I used glassline paint on the thin fire. It didn't hold the shape that well either but where the paint was it didn't crinkle up too much. They were all fused at full fuse.
In the blue one the thin fire popped through the clear cap.

Last summer, just before the accident with my computer chair, I was lucky to run across a deal of a lifetime. A friend of a friend of a friend - let me know about a bent-lamp business that hadn't been active since the 80's. They had a warehouse full of glass and lamp parts and most important a BIG kiln.

Besides my new big boy kiln I was able to pick up boxes and boxes of brass stampings, bevels and stained glass.

The most exciting find in the boxes were Murano Glass bead fringe from the 70's & 80's.

My poor pathetic blog. So neglected.

After a forced slow down in my online activities and, well all my activities I think I'm finally getting back to normal. Late August I had a freaky accident with a computer chair.

I was sitting talking to my daughter late one evening with my feet up on my desk when things started slipping... backwards! I reached up to grab the bookcase as I was falling when I heard a POP. Emergency room visit and x-rays showed nothing so off to have a MRI. There it was - my distal bicep tendon completely ruptured.

Surgery to repair by putting pins in the bone to tie the tendon to again soon followed (no more MIR's for me). 8 weeks in a splint not moving my arm or hand. Followed by 3 MONTHS of physical therapy to get my elbow straight again. But the worse part was the 8 weeks of not moving my hand or wrist caused swelling and then that turned fibrous.

Its been a struggle to get my hand and wrist moving again. Every morning I have to go through a set of hand exercises along with warming to be able to grasp my coffee cup. The jury is still out to see if it will come back to normal.

So when you hear someone say "Don't lean back in your chair, you're going to fall"

Glass Anarchy

Glass Anarchy is just that....a group of glass artists who live outside the box and are a bit independent. :)Each artist has their own unique style and love of glass. Some make fused pieces, others make beads and stained glass.

Just finished putting this together. I like the way it sounds. Just not sure I like the top bit. It was an interesting design. I made one similar and gave it away as a birthday present and they really loved it. Who knows you may see these in my Etsy stores soon!

Getting Ready for a Show

This will be my first Art Festival and its this weekend! I've got 2 more kiln loads to go but I think (hope) I have enough product. Its an indoor festival so at least I don't have to worry about the weather.

I got a drill press for my birthday. I know an odd gift but I have a friend who really understands me :) It came in handy with the pendants for Mother's Day.

A big thanks to Squidglass and Pollyfusia for sharing the technique with me for adding CZ's to the pendants. Another big thanks to ccvalenzo for sharing some dichroic advise. I have had fun playing with it! Its so good to be part of a team that is willing to help with advise and encouragement! Thank you.

Couldn't forget about Grandma. I've got Grandmother and mother pendants too.

My daughter loves these puzzle pieces so she made a bunch for the show too.

Had to add some more bling to these dichroic pieces with a some colored CZ's.

The frit pendants came out beautiful! Its hard to pick a favorite.

Also in the background are some soap dishes I made to go with my hand knitted wash clothes. We're putting them together for a spa package for Mother's Day.

This is one amazing Challenge
As a member of Creative Glass Guild of Etsy I wanted to work together with one of Etsy's jewelry street teams. Through the team leader group we were asked to join up with another team to help cross promote each other and I jumped at the chance! EtsyBead was just as anxious to try this challenge! This is the result and it couldn't have turned out better. And to think all these beautiful pieces of jewelry are being donated to HOST - an Etsy Charity that helps fellow Etsians in times of need.

Challenge details

Earlier this year, Etsy Teams were requested to cross-promote each other, and etsyBEAD paired up with the Creative Glass Guild of Etsy (CGGE). A creative challenge to give back to the Etsy community was agreed upon. So, we approached the Helping Others Street Team (HOST), and the “Creative Minds for Charity Challenge” was formed.

CGGE members created gorgeous glass pieces and etsyBEAD members turned them into beautiful pieces of finished jewelry. And we need "YOU" to pick a favorite!

Today ONLY, April 23rd, we’re asking Etsy members to visit our blog and choose their favorite piece. We will be giving away small thank you gifts donated from members across all three street teams. Names will be chosen randomly and will be announced on Thursday, April 24th!

My Birthday

It was a great one even if its the 50th. My mom came up from Florida, my son and his girlfriend drove down from upstate. With my wonderful husband they threw me a surprise party! It was great to have my friends and family all together. This is the last one I'll count going forward until I hit 0 again :) AND this was the one and only SURPRISE party, the old heart just can't take it.

I had fun taking pictures this morning of all the beautiful flowers I got for my birthday. I just love the new macro lens.

Server problems

Here we are into day 2 of our server problems. We have a co-located server in a Chicago data-center. This data center is one of the big guys at least we thought. They are suppose to have redundancies up the ying yang but apparently they forgot one! All the information I have is they were waiting for a part to be delivered from Cisco.
We found out from our service agreement that we get refunded a whole $25 a day... woo hooo.. not much consolation for our 100 plus sites running on our server. Guess we need to share the wealth.. each one will get $.25 per day of the outage. That'll keep my customers happy... oh yeah.
I understand break downs, I understand equipment failure, but I don't understand how a company as big as they are with today's technology didn't have a backup plan better than this.

Lets just hope the day gets better.

8 random getglassy facts

1 - I grew up in Niagara Falls and really miss it sometimes. I use to ride my bike through the park as a teenager and it was the 'hangout' place in the summer.

2 - I have an amazing husband, he's my best friend.

3 - I have 2 great kids even if they are adults now. My son is 27 and daughter 24 and amazing since I'm only 29 ;) I'm waiting to be a grandma but no one is cooperating!

4- My favorite color is purple and cobalt blue.

5- I LOVE snorkeling and I'm on my way to the Caribbean next week to indulge!

6 - I love cats and have two of them. They wish they could go snorkeling with me. I have never seen cats who love water as much as they do. Their favorite hang out is the bathroom sink and will stay there even when you turn the water on.

7 - Favorite food has to be pizza and wings - I am from the Buffalo area after-all.

My First Etsy Treasury

It was sooooooo much fun picking the treasury. I think I'm hooked!

So many great artist to choose from on Etsy and amazing how many belong to CGGE. I love being able to help advertise the group.

But notice the theme - the urge to get back to the Caribbean is getting stronger every day. We're planning for October, not sure I can wait that long!

Fish

Fish you say.....
I'm a Pieces I love fish. I really love swimming with the fish - literally! We try to make it to the Caribbean to snorkel at least once a year. We head to beautiful St.Thomas most of the time. Take a look at www.pocketyachts.com. It is a site I build for friends of ours in St. Thomas. If your ever heading down that way his day packages are the best. They are so friendly and will take you to all the best places!

And this guy is our yearly friend. He was either hit by a boat or shark took a bite out of him. He's missing his back leg. But friendly as can be. He'll swim with you and doesn't shy away when you get close. And when he's in the mood he'll even let you touch him.

On the day we head home we try to get one last snorkel in and thats when we found this beautiful spotted ray. Always seems like the seas save the best for last just to keep us coming back for more.

Lately I've been inspired by the desire to head back to the ocean. So here's a few little fishies I've created in glass. I'll be posting these up on Etsy soon.

Its been a busy time. Moved into a new house, been painting and remodeling, put my glass studio back together. Started seeing the chiropractor and joined CGGE - Creative Glass Guild of Etsy. New street team and jumped in with both feet. Built our website, threw in a forum, set up email and been having a blast getting to know everyone. www.cgge.org

Now I need to get back into doing glass.
This is a piece I had started before our move but just finished this week.

The coaster and box set are made from glue chip glass base, dried flowers ( I did myself), and clear glass on top, soldered to seal it all in.

Next project is going to be fish... lots of fish!

Now I'm working on taking better photos. I've got all the equipment with my love being an armature photographer. He definitely loves his toys but he lets me indulge in my toys too. I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new torch. Lampworking here I come. Next will be the kiln.

My desire for a blog has come from etsy. What is etsy you say? It’s a great site for selling handmade items and as easy for sellers as it is buyers. I found etsy and quickly set up my own store without much guidence. I did venture into a few forums there and have been totally hooked on being a lurker. So back to what gave me the push to set up this blog, the sometimes desperate need of the sellers to try to get noticed on etsy. There are a lot of people there with great ideas and a nack for marketing themselves but most don’t seem to have much of a clue. The desperate cries of “buy my stuff” gets a little, no make that A LOT annoying. I have been in marketing and advertising for years with a special focus on online advertising. I have semi-retired which leaves me the time to offer up advise on how to market and advertise your business online.

I also have been a crafter/artist for a very long time so in etsy terms I plan on a bit of PIF (Pay it Forward) in areas I think I can offer free advice and patterns. Check back often for updates in all these area and don’t hesitate to send me comments or questions.
